Ran an FM 450 (D11K 450) for regional/national work and yeah it sits in the FH’s shadow, but it’s not some cut-down misery wagon. The motor is the real point here. Pulls strong in the low/mid revs and the I-Shift mostly keeps it right in that 1100-1400 rpm zone, so it doesn’t feel like it’s hunting gears all day. Fuel use is properly low for a 40-tonner, you can see Volvo aimed this truck at running costs.

Cab wise… it’s the FM thing: same general shape as FH but you feel the space loss. That big engine tunnel eats room, and if you actually plan to live in it, you’ll notice. For solo overnights it’s fine, but it’s not the FH kind of roomy. Also the moved I-Shift controls on the dash are a bit of a reach, not my favorite.

On the road it’s easy. Steering is smooth, cabin suspension is dialed in, and it’s quiet inside, which matters on long days. Only gripe I had was the front end on that single-leaf setup; it saves weight, sure, but it doesn’t react as nicely as the two-leaf. Also you’ll pay some AdBlue, that setup likes it.

Overall it’s a work truck that drives clean and keeps the fuel card calmer, just don’t expect FH-level cab luxury.
